The bombardment of the Unesco-listed city began roughly three hours after the Israeli military issued an order online for residents to flee central areas. Huge clouds of thick smoke could be seen billowing above residential buildings.
Tens of thousands of people had reportedly fled Tyre in recent weeks as Israel stepped up its aerial campaign in Lebanon. About 1.2 million people have been displaced in total across the country, according to the Lebanese government.
